LANGHORNE: After a week of historic rain in Bucks County, the skies cleared out Friday afternoon and prepared Heartbreak Ridge for a beautiful evening of football. The grass at Neshaminy High School was in remarkable condition, considering the previous three days of flooding rain and the fans were eager to watch their favorite team hit the gridiron.
Just as in last year's 2nd game match up, both the Redskins and the Hatters of Hatboro (SOL Continental) came into tonight's game with a 1-0 record after a close first game. Both teams were looking to go 2-0 and get a quick jump on the 2011 season.
The hatters won the toss and elected to receive the ball. The first half was lackluster offensively as both teams struggled to move the ball consistently. After the teams traded a few fumbles and punts, the Redskins began moving the ball late in the first half. Bianchino connected with Marterella for 23 yards and Sean Ulmer followed that with a 33 yard scramble to the Hatter's 11 yard line. Nick Tucci then put the Redskins up 3-0 with an 29 yard field goal. The half ended with Neshaminy up 3-0 and both teams struggling to hold onto a slippery ball. The week long rain and wet field had more of an impact on game play than was first realized. The Redskins took a slim 3-0 lead into the halftime locker.
Neshaminy received the ball to start the second half but again had to punt after the Hatboro defense held Neshaminy on 3rd down. Neshaminy's defense was also equal to the task as they again forced the hatters to punt the ball on a stalled drive. Neshaminy went back to work on offense and this time it paid off in points. Bianchino hit a streaking Andrews for 30 yards down the left side to the Hatboro 15-yard line. With the Hatboro defense holding strong again, the Redskins settled for another Tucci field goal. This time it was from 30-yards out and it gave Neshaminy a 6-0 lead with just over 3 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. The game, however, was about to get interesting, very quickly. After the field goal and kickoff, the Hatters fumbled the ball at midfield. Coach Schmidt decided to kick start his offense with a trick play that dazzled everyone in the stands. Bianchino threw a lateral pass to Marterella who then threw downfield to Ulmer. The play looked perfect until Ulmer stumbled and began to fall. Marterella's pass went 30 yards, right into the arms of Ulmer who was now on his back as the pass floated into his hands. With the ball down to the Hatter's 15, the quarter ended and the teams switched ends. The 4th quarter began with Neshaminy moving the ball down to the 5-yard line before losing it on a fumble; but 2 plays later, the Hatters fumbled the ball right back to the Redskins. This time Sean Ulmer took the ball 7-yards into the endzone for the first touchdown of the evening at the 10:51 mark of the 4th quarter. After the kickoff, the Hatters again fumbled, this time at midfield. After another long run by Ulmer, the Redskins had first and goal on the 5-yard line. Several plays later, it was Ulmer over the top for a 1-yard touchdown and a 20-0 lead with 10 minutes left in the game. Hatboro would fumble the ball one more time and this time the icing on the cake was provided by Jahmier Wilson. Wilson broke free and sprinted 46 yards down the right side for a touchdown and a 27-0 lead that would stand until the closing horn.
Those in attendance tonight saw the Redskin's first 2-field goal game in a few years. They also saw Neshaminy score two of the fastest touchdowns ever, at 30 seconds apart. So here it comes, as we love to say at the end of the evening: Game to 'Skins!
