Game 03

Newtown: Back home in Harry's House for game three of their 2014 season, the Blue & Red play host to Council Rock South in the last of the non-league games. And after rolling out a new team and coach over the first two contests, the 'Skins are looking to bank win number one of the season. As to the Golden Hawks, at 1-1, they are a solidly improved group from last year's team and are no doubt looking to keep up the momentum. Then with South's head coach Vince Bedesem's Lower Bucks football genes running just as deep as Neshaminy's freshmen head man, Mike Frederick, tonight should be an old-school, rock-em, sock-em head banger. So with no need to set the table any further, it's time we headed down to the turf and the action.

With the Golden Hawks winning the toss they elected to receive. Following a nice return of the Dylan McDonald kickoff, South was set up at their 20. The first call was a run for a few yards with the next effort a pass which was picked at the 28 by JR Stevens. Coming out on the field after the turnover was Mason Jones and company as the 'Skins looked to capitalize on the break. And that's just what they did as a few runs and passes were capped by D'Andre Pollard's sprint to the endzone. Dylan McDonald's PAT was on the money too and it was then 7-0 Neshaminy at the two minute mark.

Following McDonald's next kickoff CR South stitched together a nice drive that saw them get to mid-field before stalling out. After the punt and return, Jones then brought his boys back out on the field. But not staying put long, his passes were right on the money as Denzel Hughes and Stevens were pulling them in all over the grass. Then with Pollard popping in and out like nobody's business, it was soon enough 13-0 after number 21 danced a short one across. With the McDonald PAT good it was 14-0 Neshaminy.

As the action was non-stop, and after the short return of the McDonald kickoff, it wasn't long before a Golden Hawk back lost the handle with Dan Dogba then pouncing on the loose rock at the enemy 31. Perhaps a bit excited, a missed Neshaminy block then allowed a sack of Jones as the gun ended the first-session. With the teams then flipping sides, the Blue & Red started up at the Hawk's 40 as the clock got underway. A missed Jones pass was then followed by a ten-yard completion to Zach Tredway. Facing fourth-and-ten, Jones calmly found Trevor Lay for a 30 yard score. McDonald didn't miss the extra point kick and it rolled to 21-0 with 11 minutes still showing on the second-quarter clock.

McDonald then put another kick deep and South rolled out their offense for another shot. And looking good, they were moving strong as they made it to mid-field with a couple of quick hitters. But eventually running out of steam, they ran out of gas and were forced to punt. A nice kick was downed at the Neshaminy 25 where the Moleskinners offense started back up. Getting a little tight on two runs, it was then Jones drilling Lay for a big gainer that took the ball well into Golden Hawks' territory. From there it was a methodical drive featuring runs and passes that ended when Matt 'Hollywood' Magdelinskas showed he's not just good looking -- he's also fast. McDonald didn't miss on his work as the scoreboard rolled to 28-0 halfway through the second-quarter.

It was McDonald then putting the ball out of bounds which gave the visitors a start at the 35. A couple of runs showed good effort by the Newtown club as they earned a first near mid-field. With the clock winding down the Hawks had to keep the pressure on and they did as they busted one loose to the Neshaminy 12. Another run gained nothing and at the one-minute mark South called a timeout. Well timed too the Hawks took it in on the following play. With the PAT down the middle, the score then stood at 28-7.

The Hawks kickoff was then snagged by Hollywood at Neshaminy's 27. Making the point once again Mags then turned on the burners and didn't stop till he had the back line. And just like that it was 35-7 after McDonald put the icing on the Magdelinskas' cake. South did get another try after that but with the clock running down a punt back to Neshaminy saw Jones grab a knee to end the first-half.

Following the Council Rock kickoff and a penalty for a late hit the 'Skins had great field position at almost mid-field. Not sure whether they wanted to go forward or backward it was a bit dicey as it went to a third-and-forever before Jones evaded a wall of trouble and located a wide open Hughes for another score. Mr. Automatic hit the PAT and it went to 42-7 with very little off the clock.

As McDonald lined up for another kick was then set to 'running' owing to the score. And as if South was well aware of it, their efforts increased as they worked to put another drive together. But going to a fourth-and 11 at the Neshaminy 44, the CR South pass missed and the ball went back to the 'Skins. With quarterback Joe Abdo coming out along with other new faces the Frederickmen were back on offense.

Not missing a beat Neshaminy soon enough had a first in CR territory as the fourth-quarter rolled around and the two teams were bringing in fresh jerseys across the board. With the backups picking and dancing their way down the field it was Will Dogba doing the honors as he took a short one across for a score. McDonald hit the PAT once again as it went to 49-7 as the fourth-quarter clock showed just over nine minutes remaining.

As South wasn't 'throwing in the towel', the new group mixed it up well with passes and runs as a very nice drive ended in a Newtown score with a few minutes still on the clock. Then showing how game they were, a two-point conversion by the Hawks made it 49-15 with two minutes on the clock. With another group of Neshaminy players then rotating in after the kick, the announcers were pulling out the program to get the names straight. But with nothing really in doubt at that point, it was soon enough that the final gun sounded that the clock had hit zero which means:

Game to 'Skins!

As always, we first offer a thank you to the Golden Hawks for bringing their best tonight. It's always a pleasure playing them as they are a great group with a great coach in Vince Bedesem. Then as to Neshaminy, with tonight seeing the first win of the season, and the Mike Frederick era as well, we're pleased with the improvement we've been seeing each week. With league play starting next week it will only get tougher from here on out so let's continue to see that improvement continue. And let's not forget that a solid Abington Ghost squad will be at 'The Ridge' next Friday ' so expect a barnburner folks.

PS Tonight was also Neshaminy Football Hall of Fame night and we offer a salute and congratulations to the six Redskin players who were inducted during the half-time ceremony: Mark Simpson (1974-76), Steve Smith (1977-80), Brian Jones (1978-81), Adam Behar (1998), Ryan Contento (2000-01), Keith Ennis (2000-01).

See you at the Game!
