Neshaminy Football

Perkasie: On a rainy night the ‘Skins traveled to Helman Field in Perkasie for game two against Cody Muller and his Pennridge Rams who are coming off a 54-21 win over Delaware Valley last week.

The ‘Skins had possession of the ball for the first 7 minutes of the game, scoring on a 21 yard TD run by Oleh “The Iceman” Manzyk. Two back to back penalties on the Rams gave the “Skins 15 yards which kept the drive alive. Rams’ Brian Lafty batted down the kick and the score was ‘Skins 6 – Rams 0. The ‘Skins defense kept the Rams off the board with some great defensive plays most notably Sean Smith’s sack and Marcus Griffin’s pass protection.

The 2nd quarter started with a Rams’ recovery of a ‘Skins fumble but their drive was stopped on 4th down at the ‘Skins 10 yard line. The ‘Skins took over but QB Brody McAndrew was sacked by Rams’ Shane Hartzell in the end zone for a Rams Safety. Score ‘Skins 6 – Rams 2.

The rest of the quarter was a see-saw of possessions highlighted by another sack by Sean Smith and interceptions by ‘Skins Dawson Obringer and Zack Canimore. With time running out and 41 seconds left on the clock, McAndrew threw a perfect pass to Logan Williamson in the end zone for another six, and with one more added with Thomas Leonhauser’s kick, the teams went to the locker rooms ‘Skins 13 – Rams 2.

Starting the 2nd half the Rams went to work and scored on a pass from Zak Kantor to Jonathon Post but a formation penalty nullified the 2 point conversion. Score ‘Skins 13 – Rams 8. The ‘Skins came right back with a 72 yard drive down the field to the Rams’ 9 yard line where McAndrew threw a beauty of a pass to Cory Joyce in the end zone and with a good kick by Leonhauser the score moved to ‘Skins 20 – Rams 8.

An interception by Cory Joyce shut down the next Rams’ drive but the ‘Skins could not capitalize as they turned the ball over on downs as the 4th quarter began. The Rams went for the long ball on 3 plays with no luck. Cory Joyce then returned the punt 31 yards to the 16 yard line but the ‘Skins were forced into an unsuccessful field goal attempt.

The Rams took over on their 20 yard line and in 4 plays scored on a 46 yard pass from Kantor to Post but their attempt at 2 points was no good. Score ‘Skins 20 – Rams 14. The only other action came in the last minute of the game when the ‘Skins’ entire offensive line pushed McAndrew in one yard for a TD and the extra point by Leonhauser brought the score to ‘Skins 27 – Rams 14 and that is where it stayed as the clock ran out.

Lots of ‘Skins stepped up tonight – interceptions by Cory Joyce, Dawson Obringer, Zack Canimore and Luke Hitchen as well as the entire defensive line and don’t forget the great coverage by Marcus Griffin, Logan Williamson, Cory Joyce and Connor Moss in the secondary. Sophomore Chris James showed his speed and shiftiness and we look forward to seeing what he can do the rest of the season.

Defense First star: Chisom Ifeanyi, Neshaminy

The senior defensive end was a catalyst on a defensive line that spent the night pressuring the Rams’ quarterback into four interceptions in Neshaminy’s 27-14 win over Pennridge. Ifeanyii finished with three tackles and one assist, which included two tackles for a loss and a pair of sacks.

Coach Steve Wilmot says: “This is Chisom’s third position change in three years. When he started here as a sophomore, he was a wide receiver and defensive back, and last year he moved up to linebacker. This year he really found a home on the defensive line. He’s gotten so much bigger, and he’s just a big, powerful kid. The thing about Chisom is he’s so coachable. He just wants to do a good job, he’s got a good motor – his motor goes every play. Whatever the coaches are trying to teach him, he just tries to soak it all in. Jon Craig is his position coach, and he said – the best thing about Chisom is he’s so coachable. You tell him to do stuff one time, and he does it. He’s just a great kid to have on the team. “This year we’re kind of breaking tradition. Our guys are moving around a lot this year. We don’t have those typical big 6-1, 6-2 defensive linemen that plug up the middle. We have smaller, quicker guys, and they’re strong. What we’re doing is moving them around a lot and hoping the offensive line misses them. So far, that concept is working with them. On almost every single play, they’re doing some sort of stunt that’s called in from the sidelines.”
