September 7, 1956 - Neshaminy 27, Hatboro 6
Langhorne: Fifty-one years ago, Harry Franks' dream became a reality when the Redskins opened the 1956 football season in their brand new stadium. Harry even managed to get us those new fancy-dancy lights on poles.
Way to go Harry! You are the man!
Heartbreak Ridge, as it later was christened by Dick Dougherty, hosted the Hatters of Horsham for their inaugural gridiron contest. In that game, the two R's - Reilly and Rumsey - provided most of the offensive power, in a decisive 27-6 win. Neshaminy and Hatboro would not line up against each other again until the new millennium.
The rematch was on hold... until last night.
September 7, 2007 - Neshaminy 27, Hatboro 7
Langhorne: Fifty-one years later, the two J's - Justin and Jason - provided most of the scoring in another decisive 27-7 win over the Hatters of Hatboro. With Harry in the house to witness the long awaited rematch, Neshaminy exploded in the second half with three touchdowns to again put away the Hatters (1-1) with a solid win and a 2-0 start on the 2007 season.
It didn't appear that way in the beginning as the 'Skins came out timid in the first half and could not find their offensive rhythm. Meanwhile, the Hatters marched down the field on their opening drive for a quick touchdown and held on to end the first quarter with a 7-0 lead.
Going into the second quarter down by only one score, the Redskins offense was still within easy striking distance. Neshaminy finally put points up on the board midway through the 2nd period when Jason Ulmer broke free and manhandled the Hatters for a hard fought 15 yards into the end zone. Jason's run was part beauty and part undeniable brute force... well, it was mostly just undeniable brute force. With 171 rushing yards on the night, added to last weeks 208, Jason has established himself as one of the top running backs in the always tough District One.
The first half ended with the Hatters hanging onto a slim 7-6 lead.
As the second half unfolded, it was Neshaminy, and only Neshaminy, who put points on the board. The defense clamped down on the Hatters, keeping them from moving the chains and holding them to under 200 yards for the night. That number was nearly matched yard for yard by Jason Ulmer (171) alone. Senior quarterback Justin Kinney displayed his own offensive abilities as he not-so-quietly accounted for three second-half touchdowns and the game was quickly out of reach.
Kinney, on a quarterback keeper, diced into the end zone from 15 yards out, and even capped it off with a 2-point conversion run to push the score 14-7. He then threw touchdown passes to Gary Renson and Paul Carrezola to close out the scoring and put away the Hatters for good. Kinney was 8 for 9 passing, putting up 89 yards and 2-TDs through the air to go along with his rushing TD.
While Kinney made it look easy, he was assisted by the soft hands of Renson and Carrezola, who cradled those passes and converted Justin's lofty biscuits into end zone celebrations. With just a few minutes lapsed in the final period, the 'Skins had a commanding 27-7 lead and they protected it until the final buzzer. Neshaminy ran out the final ticks of the clock, and celebrating a 2-0 start to the already exciting 2007 season.
