Souderton: Hitting the road for the first time in 2013, the 'Skins headed to Souderton to take on the Big Red of the SOL-Continental Conference in a rain delayed game. But with the sun shining, the one-day respite looked like the right call. However, this was not a team to take lightly as the fans of Langhorne well remember from last year. Plus with the expectations high for this years Neshaminy group, standing at 2-0 so far, its also a certainty that the Schmidtmen will want to show their fans that the accolades theyve been receiving are deserved. So let's get down on the field as this should be a good one.
The 'Skins won the toss and elected to receive. And getting that call might have been the highlight of the first-quarter for Neshaminy as the Creek Kids seemed sluggish from the get-go. In fact, despite consistently getting strong field position, they posted a three-and-out-and-punt that was then followed on their next series by a decent drive that then stalled with another punt. But with Souderton's offense also just as lackluster, it didn't make too much difference which team had the ball.
On their third possession, though, the Redskins finally put it all together as Cole Creighton took a reverse at the 50 and didn't stop till he hit the enemy's 15. From there it was a combination of D'Andre Pollard, Blake Sullivan and then Denny Lord finishing it off after the second-quarter had barely rolled around. Dylan McDonald hit the PAT to make it 7-0.
The second-quarter that ensued can be summed up as follows: Neshaminy's defense was doing everything asked of it while the offense still was looking as if maybe they didn't get quite enough sleep last night. In fact, after getting great field position on one series, the O fumbled the pigskin and it was only Pollard's tackle that saved a score after an Indian scooped it up and took off to their 30. From there, and despite several penalties that had kept Souderton alive and knocking on the door, the defense stopped the hosts short out on Denzel Hughes pick of a Souderton aerial in the endzone.
Finally showing the fans that had made the trip it was worth the drive, it was then Tyler Wombough hitting Pollard for a 30-yard completion out to mid-field. Pollard then bolted the rest of the way for the score with McDonald's PAT right-as-rain to make it 14-0 for Langhorne.
Running through the clock from there, the gun soon sounded the break had arrived as the teams retired for halftime. And you might just imagine that Coach Schmidt was in the mood to remind the team that penalties and miscues can be just as difficult to overcome as tackles and touchdowns by the opponent.
Back on the field, it was Sullivan booting it away to start the second-half. And in a repeat of the first half, it appeared that both offenses needed some more coffee to shake off the blues as it was an immediate four-and-out by the Indians followed by a three-and-out by the 'Skins. But getting the better of the exchange, a great Chris Watson punt had Souderton mired at their one. Barely escaping two safeties, they punted and Neshaminy was in a great spot at their 35 after the catch. As the Blue & Red offense was still struggling, it went to a fourth and ten at the 20 before Wombough found Hughes streaking toward the endzone where he made the catch and earned the score. McDonald was on the money again and it went to 21-0 for Neshaminy with just a few ticks left in the third.
As the fourth-period rolled around, the continued series of penalties and mistakes by Langhorne kept the Indians hanging around when it didn't really seem necessary. Still, with seven-minutes left in the final session, Souderton was punting from its endzone once again when a Redskin made contact with the punter and gave them a first at their ten. Just the ticket for the home team, the Indians then started their best march of the game as they were simultaneously chewing up the clock and the yardage (the former bad for them but the latter good). Out at mid-field, the Indians finally hit a fourth and nine with four minutes in the game. Going for it, a nice pass and grab made it close but no cigar as it went back to Neshaminy.
With Jones coming back in under center, his first call was to hand it off to Pollard who immediately raced the 50-plus yards for his second score of the night. McDonald obviously had the PATs down pat and the score went to 28-0 for Neshaminy.
After the kickoff the Indians then stitched together a nice drive before finally grinding to a halt at mid-field. A great punt on a long fourth down then just barely rolled into the endzone which gave the ball back to Neshaminy at their 20. From there it was Jones back out on the field to take a few knees as they clock ran down to end the game.
