2018 Game 8 Header

Bensalem: Perfect football weather for a Saturday afternoon at Bensalem Township Memorial Stadium where Head Coach Ed Cubbage and his Owls are preparing for Homecoming. The ‘Skins and the Owls have a long history of games going all the way back to 1930. Once a highly anticipated Thanksgiving Day match-up in our early years, the Owls moved into the regular season schedule after 1962.

The first half was a busy one for the ‘Skins. They won the coin toss and Logan Williamson took the opening kick 88 yards to the house for a touchdown. Jack Hughes’ kick was good and just like that the score was ‘Skins 7- Owls 0. Owls’ Shane Simmons then returned the ‘Skins kick 52 yards and the Owls managed to get down into ‘Skins territory on the 32 yard line but penalties forced a punt. The ball went back and forth quickly as both teams went out on downs. Then with 2:01 left in the 1st quarter Oleh ‘The Iceman” Manzyk steamrolled his way right down the middle for a 42 yard TD and Hughes was 2 for 2. Score ‘Skins 14 – Owls 0.

Five minutes into the 2nd quarter saw Chris James drive for 2 yards for a touchdown and again Hughes’ kick was good. Score was ‘Skins 21 – Owls 0. On the Owls’ next possession Chisom Ifeanyi strips the ball from middle linebacker Demetrius Coles. Manzyk recovers the fumble and quickly gets into the end zone where he also fumbles but Connor Moss jumps on the ball to score another 6. Hughes splits the uprights for another point. With 45 second left in the first half Williamson intercepted Tyler Barry’s pass and the ‘Skins took a knee to let the clock run out. Halftime score ‘Skins 28 – Owls 0.

The 2nd half began exactly as the 1st half ended with an interception, this time by Marcus Griffin. The ‘Skins made full use of the opportunity by moving the ball all the way down to the Owls 13 yard line where QB Brody McAndrew threw a beautiful pass to Zack Cannimore in the end zone for 6. An offside penalty on the Owls on the first extra point attempt was declined and Hughes’ second kick was as good as his first bringing the score to ‘Skins 35 – Owls 0 and the mercy rule took effect. Freshman QB Gavin O’Connor and some new faces took over with 3 minutes left in the 3rd quarter.

Going into the 4th quarter the Owls gathered momentum and put together a steady drive of runs all the way to the ‘Skins 20 yard line where Jared O’Connell brought it in for 6 and Dawson Fontaine’s kick was good. Score ‘Skins 35 – Owls 7.

The ‘Skins put together a series of plays which featured some nice running by O’Connor, Greg Orleski and a 10 yard pass to Luke Yeager. Of note is a pass to Dayvon Tinsley who managed to catch and keep the ball even after it was tipped by an Owl defenseman to gain 16 yards. Once on the Owls’ 10 yard line O’Connor brought it home himself for 6. Lining up for a two point conversion, the ‘Skins elected to take a knee and the clock ran out. Final score was ‘Skins 41 – Owls 7.

Hats off to Jack Hughes who was 5 for 5 on PATs and to Marcus Griffin, Emmanual Ampofo and Logan Williamson who each had an interception.
