Game 07

Souderton: On the road for game seven of the 2014 campaign, the 'Skins travelled to Souderton Area High for another SOL National Conference game. And with the Indians fast becoming a "player", the series which has developed between these two schools over the last six years has become very intense. Adding in that the 'Skins are having an up-and-down year at 2-4, and with the Indians at 3-3, this is an important contest for both clubs. So with no need to set this up any further, its time we head down to the turf and all the action.

With the Indians winning the toss, they elected to receive and after a nice return of the Dylan McDonald kickoff they lined up at their 30. But with their first effort on offense seeing a three-and-out, a punt gave the ball to Neshaminy at their 30 after the short Denzel Hughes return. Than as the 'Skins offense came on the field at that spot, a Mason Jones pass started it up but just missed its target. D'Andre Pollard then got the next call and showing why he's one of the top backs in the state, he ripped off a 70-yarder for the score. McDonald's PAT was then good and the 'Skins were in front, 7-0.

McDonald's next kick hit the endzone and Souderton started up at their 20. But with their offense still sputtering, they were soon lined up to punt. But with a tough snap getting loose, and after the scrum, the 'Skins had the ball at the enemy 26. A run and pass then had a first for the 'Skins at the 16 but an offsides set them back five. No matter, though, as Jones then hit Hughes down to the 11 to make it second-and-five. But Pollard was next bottled up for no gain before it was Hughes pulling in a Jones' pass at the three for a first down. Two run efforts by Pollard had it at the one before a pass just missed. Going for it on fourth down, another five-yard penalty against the 'Skins then brought the field goal crew on the field. And McDonald was on the money as he put it through the uprights to make it 10-0.

Souderton then grabbed the McDonald kick and had it at the 33 following the return. This time looking a little sharper, a nice few plays had the Indians at the 45 with a first. But getting sideways, Souderton went upstairs to get out of a jam but it only got worse as Cale Kitchenman made a nice pick and returned it to the enemy 16. With the Big Red defense stiffening at that point, it went to fourth-and-12 as Neshaminy called a timeout to look it over with 37 just seconds left in the first-quarter. Going for it, the Jones' pass just missed his receiver as Souderton grabbed some momentum. One play then went nowhere, though, as the quarter ended and the teams switched directions.

Following the walk, Souderton went to a third-down play with a nice mis-direction then breaking it loose all the way to their 40. One play then went backwards with the next forward to bring up third-and-short. But another nice run moved the chains to Neshaminy's side of the 50. From there the Indians continued to press as they soon had a first at the 24 followed by another at the 10-yard stripe. But jammed up there, it went to a fourth-and-goal at the six from where the Indians took the money-play and hit a short field goal to make it 10-3.

After the kickoff, the 'Skins soon moved the ball down the field on a nice mix of passes by Jones and runs by Pollard to gain a first down at the Indian's 25. After a timeout by the visitors to catch their breath, it was to no avail as Pollard and Kitchenman then took it to a fourth-and-goal at the one foot line. From there it was Pollard taking it across on second effort as McDonald then hit the PAT to make it 17-3. The kickoff was then a bouncer which was fallen on by an Indian as the clock soon burned out to send the teams to the locker rooms.

With Neshaminy receiving the kickoff, the bouncer ended up giving Neshaminy the ball at their 35. From there a nice mix of runs by Pollard, and passes by Jones to Hughes and Zach Tredway, soon enough had the ball down to the 21 with a third-and-short showing. Dan Dogba then earned the first but after a couple of misfires it went to a fourth-and-11 and what looked like a McDonald field goal try; however, Souderton jumped offsides and after shortening it to fourth-and-five the 'Skins went for it from the 15. And it paid off too as Jones hit Hughes in the endzone for the six-pointer. McDonald then had his PAT blocked to keep the score at 23-3 following the five-minute drive.

Not throwing the towel in, Souderton took the kickoff back to Neshaminy's 15-yard line for a terrific spot. From there one Indian run grabbed three yards with two pass plays then missing to bring up a fourth-and-seven at the 12. Souderton then tried a long field goal but it missed and the ball went over to Neshaminy inside the redzone. But not hanging there long, the 'Skins soon had it to the mid-field stripe on the efforts of Pollard on the ground and some nice passes from Jones to Hughes and Dan Dogba. Stalled for a moment, Pollard broke for a first and then a Tredway catch of a Jones pass took it to the 25. One play later saw Hughes make a short grab as the clock hit zero on the third-quarter.

After the flip-flop and the start of the fourth-quarter, Jones faced a second-and-long as he took the handoff, stepped back and then nailed Tredway in the endzone for another six points. McDonald then showed he was human as he missed the PAT and the scoreboard read 29-3 in Neshaminy's favor.

With the kickoff going out-of-bounds, Souderton took over at their 35. And soon enough going to the airlanes to shorten the field, it was Hughes coming up with another interception for Neshaminy. A nice return to the Indian's 30 was brought back by a holding call after the theft so that the 'Skins had it at their 25 as Jones brought his troops on the field.

A few runs from there worked the ball well as the 'Skins were soon at the 35. It was then 'Hollywood' Magdelinskas came in for an end-around that earned six. Taking three more too, Mags then earned the first, plus some more, to get the ball to the mid-field stripe. Going to a third-down there, it was Dan Dogba powering his way to Souderton's 44 for another "chain-move" but a loose exchange on the next play saw the ball go back over to the Indians at their 45.

As there were then just three minutes left in the game, some new faces began to trickle in for Neshaminy and Souderton as a couple of runs quickly moved the Big Red inside Neshaminy's 40. A pass play then put it near the 20 before four more ground efforts had it in the back ten for the Souderton touchdown. The PAT was good and the scoreboard then rolled to 29-10.

The Indians then booted the kickoff away and 'Hollywood' made the catch to give Neshaminy the ball at their 25. From there a few running plays saw the clock run out of time which means just one thing:

Game to 'Skins!

Thank you, first of all, to our hosts at Souderton for bringing their best tonight. Its a pleasure playing the Indians and we look forward to many more over the coming years. Peering over to Neshaminy's side of the field, tonight saw a nice effort by the Redskins in an important road game. In that regard, the lessons of Coach Frederick are no doubt sinking in. Now at 3-4, and with league play continuing next week, Neshaminy is on the road again as they take on longtime opponent, Bensalem. And although its an away game, its still close enough that we expect a large contingent of Redskin's fans will make the trek to cheer on the boys as they face the always tough Owls.
